Gig at the Winery

Played a 3 set gig with my good friends, The Weekend Project, last night.  Steve Garret-guitar, Bill Bolin-drums, Brian Coleman-guitar/vocals and Kim Kelly-vocals.  The 3 sets were a mix of Motown/Stax, classic rock and rockabilly tunes and tons of fun.  The Ashdown big rig wasn’t quite overkill, but I didn’t take it out of “2nd gear” either.  As always, you find the weird technical glitches 2 minutes before the first downbeat- last night I got a weird volume swell at the end of my pot on my Lakland 55-02, in the low input of the ashdown there was 0 sound from the bass until the last 25% of the pot’s taper… weird.  I switched it over to the high input and rolled back the pre-amp to compensate… I guess that’s my project to work on this weekend.

Steve was gracious enough to let me use his Washburn AB-40 acoustic bass for a couple of songs… well, it was going to be only a “couple” but had so much fun with the thump of AB-40, that I think I played half the songs on it!  (high action+ flat wound strings+ Ashdown pre cranked to all tube growl= absolute fun.)

The Lakland had its place too, but I’m ready to switch the DR Lo-Riders out and go back to the Fat Beams… there’s definitely a different character between them, and though I loved Lo-Riders back in the day, those Fat Beams fit the Lakland better.

The crowd of 100+ folks there for a private dinner party enjoyed it… they danced, they ate, they drank the fabulous wine crafted there at Crossroads Winery… it was a great gig.
